BankRI to Support Latino Public Radio

Providence, R.I. – April 19, 2011 – Bank Rhode Island (BankRI) announced today it has made a donation of $5,000 to support Latino Public Radio in Rhode Island.  Twenty five hundred dollars will go to support the station’s Havana Nights Community Excellence Awards Celebration. The additional $2,500 was given in response to an emergency challenge grant from the Rhode Island Foundation in order to continue the station’s broadcast.

The Community Excellence Awards will honor a number of exceptional people in the community and will take place on April 23rd at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, RI, as part of Latino Public Radio’s annual fundraiser.

In addition to supporting this event, BankRI has also made a donation in response to a challenge grant from the Rhode Island Foundation.  The funds raised will be used to develop a community case for the station, which will allow Latino Public Radio to apply for funds from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, thereby securing the station’s future.

“Latino Public Radio is dedicated to inform and educate the Latino community through the production and distribution of high quality radio programs, that help ensure the success of our community,” said Dr. Pablo Rodriguez, President, Latino Public Radio, Chief Executive Officer, Women's Care, Inc, and member of Bank RI’s Board of Directors. “BankRI has always been a valuable partner to our station, and we share the same vision of success for the entire community. BankRI’s support is especially gratifying at a time when there are less and less corporations contributing to the charitable fabric of the state. Muchas gracias!”

“In this economic climate it is vital that private businesses help to support stations like Latino Public Radio.  The station is vital to the Latino community in Rhode Island and we are proud to support the station’s ability to make a difference,” said Merrill Sherman, President and CEO of BankRI.

Latino Public Radio informs, educates, and entertains the Spanish-speaking radio audience in Rhode Island.  This is done through the production and distribution of intelligent, high quality, cultural and educational programming that reflects the diversity of the Latino community.
