BankRI Supports Books Are Wings

Books collected in branches will be sent to Rhode Island communities

PROVIDENCE, RI – March 5, 2011 – Bank Rhode Island (BankRI) announced today that it is collaborating with Books Are Wings to help put free books in the hands of children in some of Rhode Island’s most needed communities.  All through the month of March, BankRI will be accepting new and gently used books at all seventeen branch locations for the second year in a row.  Last year the drive was incredibly successful and more than 2,000 books were donated, and BankRI hopes to surpass that number this year.

“BankRI is excited to join forces with Books Are Wings to help provide access to books for vulnerable children and families,” said Mark Meiklejohn, President and CEO of BankRI.  “By providing these books and encouraging literacy, Books Are Wings helps to give children the tools they need to be successful in life.”

Through book drives, book parties, and partnership events, Books Are Wings increases reading levels by fostering a love of reading through motivation and choice of book.  Recent long term studies have shown that children who do not have exposure to books in their homes are at least one grade level behind children with a multitude of books.

“Books Are Wings is delighted to collaborate with BankRI once again to collect new and gently used children’s books,” said President of Brooks Are Wings, Monique T. Renaud. “We appreciate BankRI’s recognition of the importance of children having books of their own to read and reread on their own time. Books Are Wings’ mission to nurture the love of reading is shared by BankRI, and we welcome its commitment to have book drives in all of their seventeen locations.”

Books Are Wings believes that children who love to read will develop the literacy skills that they need to succeed.  The organization is dedicated to working toward a day when all children have access to books in their homes. For more information about Books Are Wings, please visit
